Spline Shaft
A spline shaft is a mechanical component used for transmitting torque between two parts in a power transmission system. It features equally spaced teeth or ridges, called splines, that mesh with corresponding grooves in a mating piece such as a gear hub or coupling. This splined connection allows for efficient torque transfer and precise alignment while permitting axial movement when needed.

Advantages of Splined Shafts
Efficient Torque Transmission
The multiple interlocking teeth provide a larger contact area, allowing for higher load capacity and reducing stress concentrations.
Precise Alignment
The equally spaced teeth of splined shafts ensure precise angular alignment between the shaft and hub. The self-centering nature of spline teeth maintains this alignment even under dynamic loading conditions.
Longer Service Life
By distributing stress across multiple teeth, the risk of localized fatigue or wear is minimized. Additionally, the smooth sliding action of splines reduces fretting and galling, further enhancing durability.
Even Load Distribution
Splined shafts excel at evenly distributing loads along the shaft length. Unlike keys or pins that concentrate stress at a single point, splines engage across a larger area, minimizing localized deformation or failure.
Reduced Wear and Tear
The interlocking spline teeth minimize relative motion between the shaft and hub, reducing wear and tear compared to other connection methods.
Backlash Control
The close-fitting teeth eliminate play or gaps between the shaft and hub, ensuring immediate and accurate response to torque inputs.
Higher Rotational Speeds and Better Balance
The symmetrical design of splined shafts promotes better balance and allows for higher rotational speeds compared to asymmetric connections like keyways. The even distribution of mass reduces vibration and allows for smoother operation at elevated speeds.
Functions Of Splined Shafts
Splined shafts are mechanical components that offer three important functions in mechanical systems: Torque transmission, alignment, and load distribution.
Torque Transmission
Spline shafts can transmit higher torques than plain shafts due to the interlocking splines, which provide a larger contact surface area, ensuring efficient power transfer. This is important in automotive drivetrains, where high torque must be transferred from the engine to the wheels.
Alignment and Positioning
The shaft’s joining with its mating component leads to accurate alignment and reduced wear. As a result, there is better performance and safety. For example, in aircraft control systems, it reduces vibrations and noise and improves overall system performance.
Load Distribution
An even load distribution across the splines extends the shaft’s lifespan and reduces wear and tear. This even load distribution in industrial machinery ensures equipment reliability and longevity, reduces downtime and maintenance costs, and prevents localized stress concentrations.

Types of Splined Shafts
Internal Splines
Internal splines, also known as female splines, have grooves cut into the inner diameter of a cylindrical component such as a gear hub. The mating shaft has a corresponding externally splined section that fits into these grooves. Internal splines are commonly used when space is limited, as they allow for a more compact design compared to external splines.
External Splines
External splines, or male splines, feature ridges or teeth on the outer diameter of a shaft. The mating component, such as a gear hub or coupling, has corresponding internal grooves that engage with the external splines. External splines are more widely used than internal splines due to their ease of manufacturing and ability to transmit higher torque loads.
How are Splined Shafts Manufactured
CNC Turning
CNC turning uses lathes and cutting tools directed by computer numeric control (CNC) software. Rotating the tools and workpiece on up to 5 axes, the shaft can be machined with exceptional precision, even for extremely complex components. Multi-axis operation allows for fine cuts at virtually any angle with speed unmatched by other more traditional methods.
CNC Milling
Similar to CNC Turning, CNC milling uses a lathe to hold the workpiece as rotating mill cutters precisely remove extra material to create the desired groove and tooth shapes. Our 5-axis CNC milling equipment allows us to create splines, gears, bearings, and other precision components within extremely tight tolerances.
Specialty Machining
Extensive machining capabilities include customized specialty machining for unusual or specialized components. Using state-of-the-art CNC machining, we can shape splines both inside and out, enabling us to produce quality spline profiles in virtually any size and shape.
What Materials are Splined Shafts Made From?
Alloy steels
Alloy steels are iron-based or ferrous—Alloys that contain a blend of other metals used to enhance certain characteristics such as ductility, hardness, toughness, and tensile strength. Alloy steels may include chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper in addition to iron.
Aluminum alloys
An excellent lightweight option for many applications, aluminum alloys are less dense than steel, but with a high strength-to-weight ratio. They are tougher than some steels, and can perform well under high pressures. In addition, aluminum alloys are corrosion-resistant and will not rust when exposed to moisture.
Carbon steel
Carbon steel features iron with up to 1.7% carbon content. This material produces very strong components with an exceptional degree of accuracy.
Stainless steels
Stainless steels are distinguished by their corrosion resistance. This alloy contains chromium, which interacts with air to create a protective oxidized layer that prevents rust and corrosion. In addition, stainless steels are strong, durable, and wear-resistant with high tensile strength.
