What is a rigid coupling?

A rigid coupling is one that does not allow axial or radial motion between thedriving and driven shafts .As shown in Fig.3.130, a rigid coupling consistsof two flanges, one mounted on each shaft. Rigid couplings require exactalignment between shafts otherwise considerable wear on the bearings andseals will occur.

 

What is a clamp coupling?
The clamp coupling joins two shafts when they are inalignment, and this coupling does not permit any movementof the shafts. lt is also known as Split muff coupling.Universal Coupling:lt allows positive transmission of powerat larger angles than is permissible with a flexible coupling.

 

What's the difference between rigid and flexible coupling?
These couplings transfer torque from one shaft to another. Rigid shafts transfer more torquebut reauire no misalianment between the shafts. Flexible couplings allow for somemisalignment, typically up to 5° in parallel, axial, or angular directions.
